About Emma

My interest and passion for birth was sparked when I witnessed a home birth in 2011. That birth inspired me to become a doula. Birth had always been presented to me as a chaotic and messy process, but this birth was quiet and empowering. It was clear that there was mutual respect between the care provider and clients. This experience was also the impetus that led me to research birth and midwifery in the state of Alabama for my PhD thesis. I traveled all over Alabama for two years with a certified professional midwife doing field research; witnessing births in and out of hospitals. What has become most clear to me from this research is that women and families need greater access to people and systems of support.
Being a doula also birthed my roller derby alias: Doula at your Cervix.
I have attended DONA approved birth doula workshops, and am working toward certification with DONA. I have also completed a Lamaze childbirth educator training.
My goal for every client is that they feel as informed and supported as possible throughout their pregnancy and birth. I absolutely love chatting about women’s reproductive health, and enjoy working with clients to find the answers to their questions.
I will be moving from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham in August of 2019! Sadly, this means that I will no longer be attending births Tuscaloosa. However, I am happy to answer any questions about birthing in Tuscaloosa, as well as recommend quality OBGYNs and doulas!
